What is a mental health care plan anyway?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) allows you to access Medicare rebates for psychology sessions. This guide explains what it is, who is eligible, how to get one through your GP, and what to expect.

What is a mental health care plan anyway?

If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, you may have come across the term Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and wondered what it actually means.

In simple terms — it’s a way to make therapy more affordable.

Let me walk you through it.

What Is a Mental Health Care Plan?

A Mental Health Care Plan is a document prepared by your GP that allows you to receive Medicare rebates for psychology sessions.

With a valid plan and referral, you can access Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual therapy sessions per calendar year.

You’ll return to your GP after your 6th session for a brief review — essentially a check-in to see how things are progressing.

It’s a practical step that makes accessing support easier and more affordable.

Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible if you’re experiencing:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Stress or burnout
  • Eating or body image concerns
  • Trauma
  • Adjustment difficulties
  • Or other mental health challenges

You do not need to be in crisis. Many of my clients seek support early — when they notice things feeling heavier, more overwhelming, or harder to manage alone.

Your GP will talk through what’s been happening for you and determine whether a plan is appropriate.

How Do I Get One?

It’s a straightforward process.

Step 1: Book a longer GP appointment

When booking, let reception know you’d like to discuss a Mental Health Care Plan so they can allocate enough time.

Step 2: Attend your GP appointment

Your GP will:

  • Ask about your symptoms
  • Discuss how they’re impacting your day-to-day life
  • Complete a brief assessment
  • Prepare the plan if suitable

If you’d like to work with me, you can ask your GP to address the referral directly to me. This helps streamline the process.

Step 3: Book your appointment

Once you have your referral, you can book in.

After each session, Medicare rebates are processed. If you attend sessions with me under a Mental Health Care Plan, the current Medicare rebate is $98.95 per session, which helps reduce your out-of-pocket cost.

What if I’m embarrassed to talk to my GP?

This is so common.

Many people feel awkward, exposed, or even a little ashamed bringing up their mental health with their GP — especially if you’re used to being the “capable one” who holds everything together.

You might worry:

  • “It’s not serious enough.”
  • “I should be coping better.”
  • “They’ll think I’m overreacting.”
  • “I don’t even know how to explain it.”

The good news is that GPs talk about mental health every single day. It’s a normal and expected part of their work. You won’t shock them. You won’t be wasting their time.

If it helps, you don’t need a perfect explanation. You can simply say: “I’ve been struggling a bit lately and I think I need some support.”

That’s enough.

You’re allowed to ask for help before things fall apart. In fact, that’s often the best time to reach out.

And if the idea still feels daunting, you’re welcome to contact me first. I can talk you through what to expect so the process feels less overwhelming.

Taking that first step can feel uncomfortable — but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Do I Have to Use All 10 Sessions?

Not at all.

Some people find a few focused sessions are enough. Others prefer longer-term support. We’ll work together to decide what feels helpful and sustainable for you.

Do I Need a Mental Health Care Plan to See Me?

No.

You’re welcome to book privately without a referral. A Mental Health Care Plan simply allows you to claim Medicare rebates.

Taking the First Step

Starting therapy can feel like a big step — especially if you’re used to coping on your own.

If you’re considering reaching out, speaking with your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan is often a good place to begin.

If you have questions about the process, fees, or whether I might be the right fit for you, please feel free to get in touch. I’m happy to guide you through the next steps.

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
