If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP, you are eligible for a Medicare rebate on psychology sessions. Louise is a registered psychologist and accepts clients with a Mental Health Care Plan.
The current Medicare rebate for a registered psychologist is $98.95 per session. With the standard session fee of $220, this leaves an out-of-pocket cost of around $121.05.
A Mental Health Care Plan allows you to claim up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year. Your GP will assess your needs and refer you to a psychologist as part of the plan. You do not need a Mental Health Care Plan to book - but without one, the full session fee applies.
Book a longer appointment with your GP and let them know you would like to discuss your mental health. Your GP will talk with you about how you are feeling and, if appropriate, prepare a Mental Health Care Plan that includes a referral to a psychologist.
Once you have your plan, bring it to your first appointment or send a copy ahead of time. Louise will take care of the rest.
Some private health insurance policies include psychology sessions as part of their extras cover. The amount you can claim varies by insurer and policy. Check with your provider to see what you are entitled to.
Please note that you cannot claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health insurance benefit for the same session.
